Welcome to Best Practices Exchange, a website dedicated to information about the Best Practices Exchange Conferences and an online community for librarians, archivists, records managers and other information professionals dedicated to managing digital information primarily in state government. The forum provides a place for you to discuss issues, challenges, and solutions. The 2010 Best Practices Exchange will take place in Phoenix, Arizona, Wednesday, 29 September through Friday, 1 October. The program may also include a one day pre-conference workshop on digital preservation management.
The Best Practices Exchange program has always been a grass-roots effort, with presentations by individuals working in the field who want to share their knowledge and get insights from others. The presentations are collaborative and informal. The program will include a variety of tracks covering all aspects of digital curation:
- Track 1: New ways of working: strategically rethinking curatorial strategy
- Track 2: New tools: Practical, hands-on techniques, tips, and tools
- Track 3: New media: Collecting and preserving social media, the rising use of audio and video formats
- Track 4: Policy and administration: Sustainable programs and commitment to long-term preservation
The program will feature presentations from the four States Initiatives projects funded by the Library of Congress, National Digital Information Infrastructure and Preservation Program (NDIIPP). The projects include:
- Geospatial Multistate Archive and Preservation Project (GeoMAPP), led by the North Carolina Center for Geographic Information and Analysis
- Persistent Digital Archives and Library System (PeDALS), led by the Arizona State Library and Archives
- A Model Technological and Social Architecture for the Preservation of State Government Digital Information, led by the Minnesota Historical Society
- A Multi-State Preservation Program, led by the Washington State Archives

This is a moderated list, which originated as a discussion forum for the group using state GILS metadata for electronic publications at the state government level. The list has expanded to be a forum for discussing all aspects of providing access to state government information. That includes topics such as preservation of old, fragile paper documents, issues involved in depository programs, GILS, digitizing projects, electronic archiving, outreach, and related topics.
